It’s about <st1:time hour="6" minute="30" st="on">6:30 A.M.</st1:time> and there’s a beautiful sunrise beginning to peak over the northeastern hills—baby pinks and blues right now, hints of vanilla (How appropriate!). Our big little girl was born 4 minutes to 4 A.M. Wednesday morning weighing 10 pounds and 10 ounces. ((((WHEW!!!)))) Most of that weight put on in the last 2 ½ weeks prior, from what I could tell, but then, Rowan was 10-1 and I ate SAD throughout. {Methinks the genes of my beloved husband had some influence here.}

Anyhoo, everyone is doing well. Better even. By Wednesday evening I was downstairs for a while on the couch, Thursday up and about around the house. I even took “Shelf” outside on the moveable “porch” swing for a while, laying and rocking and nursing with one of those soft warm breezes kissing legs and arms and faces. Friday she was finally able to really open her eyes (they were swollen from delivery) and looked all around with her cute newborn crosseyes. ((giggle)) Then a mini photo shoot and off to the library and store to get groceries {I NEED GREENS!!! ((craving)))} and to print off some pics to send out to everyone.

Thurs-Friday I couldn’t get to sleep, I think because my milk was coming in (THANK YOU Raw Tahini Milk!!) And was hot and hormonal. So I slept a bit between <st1:time hour="16" minute="30" st="on">4:30</st1:time> and 9 off and on, but not much sleep there. Suprisingly didn’t seem to change functionability too much. (((Is that because of the vegan vs. meat???))) So last night I was still the last to get to sleep, maybe around 12:30-1am after nursing, then woke a little bit ago to nurse again and I felt rested and ready for the day, sooooooo . . . as the mini-Sharilyn World is sleeping I thought I’d type this up to post later today at the library. And without further ado, I give you:

The Birth Story of "Shelf" (name undecided as of yet) UPDATE: After 2 weeks of deliberating, we've finally decided on Gabriella Nyx.

As some of you know, I had been having regular contractions since 36 ½ weeks, roughly every 10-15 minutes. They didn’t hurt, they were mainly an annoyance. I began cervical ripening with evening primrose oil at the 37 week mark in hopes of bringing on labor, which obviously didn’t work. (Knowing how big Rowan was, and feeling the babe growing so large throughout the pregnancy on such a healthy diet, I (with my midwife’s OK) felt this was good to do. (I asked her about using castor oil and she advised against using that before 42 weeks, as she had seen too often babes delivering when they weren’t “lined up” quite right.) So that with a bit of nipple stimulation, but still no labor, and STILL having the B H contractions that didn’t produce was a bit frustrating.

Then on Wednesday I had a major migrane, which I chalked up to the handful of tootsie rolls I ate, as the last headache I had was when I had the flu at 2 months, and prior to that I can’t remember. Perhaps instead it was a flood of hormones or whatever getting my bod geared up for labor. Contractions started getting harder in the evening, but hadn’t gotten closer than the 10 minutes, and some had even gotten further apart, as much as 35-40 minutes.

I called my midwife a couple times that evening, but said to hold off coming as she’s 2 hours from me and I didn’t want her driving here for “nothing.” She was going to bed around 11:30-12 and told me to call then to let her know how I was doing, but after getting up to pee and having 3 contractions on top of one another in the 5 minute trip to the bathroom I called her shortly there after, which was a good thing. I began getting everything ready, did a quick mini-enema, filled the pool set up in the upstairs hallway, put down plastic, set out towels and supplies etc. Shortly after I woke Rich to rub my back during contractions and do some acupressure points.

The midwife arrived around 1:30, checked me and the baby, and I got into the pool shortly after. I guess I started feeling pushy around <st1:time hour="14" minute="30" st="on">2:30</st1:time>, but didn’t start the regular hard labor for another 15-20 minutes. Pushed hard (mostly) for about and hour, then her head was partway out, but I was nearing exhaustion, so out of the pool Rich lifted me. I got on my hands and knees and with the midwife behind me helping to turn the baby (her shoulder was stuck for a couple minutes until she corkscrewed) and pushed her out. It took a bit of rubbing and a few puffs of oxygen to get her going (Tight squeeze!), but she started girgling then crying softly. I am VERY glad I opted for a midwife rather than unassisted here!! Rich held the baby, warming her and talking to her gently.

Within a couple minutes I felt another contraction, so I got back on hands and knees and gave a little push---Out popped the placenta. Pretty cool looking, so I asked all kinds of questions about it, what’s this thing here, how does that look, etc. Then I hopped into the shower while Rich and the midwife dealt with cutting the cord, rubbing in the vernix, etc. I got into bed and Rich brought the babe to me to nurse. She latched right on and Boy! could she suck! The midwife and Rich were busy cleaning up a bit, draining the pool, etc., then I got checked for tears. There was a very small internal perineum tear, which tells me, ladies, that delivering on your back is NOT the way to go!! I had an episiotomy with Tris and tore to a 2 with Rowan, both on my back, as the doctor ordered.

Anyway, she said I looked real good. The midwife put golden seal on the baby’s umbilical stump, brought up my coconut water and raisins, tucked us in, hung out for a couple hours to make sure everyone was fine, and then was off. Since then, I’ve gotten small patches of sleep, but haven’t really needed much, which totally surprised me. It took until Friday evening for the baby’s swelling around her eyes to go down enough for her to really open them, but now she’s bright eyed and curious.

And still doesn’t have a name as I type this, but we’re almost there. I was hoping one would just fit, but so far just a couple really close but not quites. Anyone have suggestions? Doesn’t matter anyway, as we’ll have decided by the time I’m able to get to the library and check e-mail again.

Well, gotta run. I hear some hungry grunts. ;o}

(We're not planning on any more after this one.)

Anyhoo, will give an update once Sharilyn JR. arrives.Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03705722228987921339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6827557966163506532.post-53499479591303358332010-08-16T14:17:00.000-07:002010-08-16T14:40:55.271-07:00August HeatSo it's about halfway through August and it's been one heat wave after another. But my garden melons are lovin' it, and I'm anxiously awaiting their ripening.
Kid news: We've decided to homeschool Tristen this year. He's been asking to be homeschooled since last year let out, so we did a trial run for a couple weeks and he LOVED IT. Mainly because it was finally up to his math/science/reading levels. So, I'm jumping in with both feet and have read about 11 different "homeschooling how to" books to get a good feel from a number of different sources. Not to mention the web research. I don't mind the "work" at all. It has, in fact, rekindled some personal interest in all subjects. I use to LOVE doing math problems in HS, and learning different aspects in the science field . . . can't wait!
Rowan is saying some funny things as of late--course i can't think of any of them as I type, that would be too easy. But we seem to have a good laugh almost daily. She's doing really well with her reading and can now read about 20-25 words. Can't wait til that "click" happens in her brain and she starts learning words at a fast rate. Will be interesting to observe.
"Shelf" has gotten a bit less active--running out of room I suppose. I've been trying to drink green juice with cucumber daily, to help with stretching and hopefully "unstretching" after the birth. I'm not due until mid September, but am hoping s/he will arrive early as Daddy is big, and Rowan weighed 10.1. Fine for the hospital, but at home I'm aiming for a bit smaller, so the sooner after 38 weeks, the better. I still haven't gained much weight wise--about 3 pounds total--but I measured my bust, hips, theighs, etc. and have lost a few inches, around 6 or so. Interesting. And if there's anyone else who reads this blog that had a raw or mostly raw pregnancy, I'd love to hear about your weight gain etc. and how baby turned out.
Any hoo, here's to a quick and fairly painless labor and a happy, healthy babe! (holding up a cup of cuke-celery-apple-ginger juice)
~~~SharilynRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03705722228987921339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6827557966163506532.post-75054494423382784422010-07-05T13:04:00.000-07:002010-07-05T13:28:36.404-07:00MeanderingsA million thoughts. Getting ready for baby. EC. Cloth diapers. How come I'm not gaining much weight (although no question about girth!!!!LOL.)? Sleeping w/o Rowan coming in to sleep in the wee morning hours and ''squishing" the newest. Laundry to do. Tristen back from his dad's for 3 weeks, 10 lbs heavier, not a damn thing i can do about it. Green smoothie, anyone?? Will Rowan be O.K. or overly jealous? Will I be able to deal w/ the sleep deprivation and a 3 year old on top of a newborn? Water birth? Stop worrying, already!!!!!
At least I'm not worried in the least about the whole giving birth part, oddly enough. I've been able to picture laboring in the upstairs hall and my bedroom right from the get-go. Then the idea of setting up a birthing pool in the kitchen, or possibly giving birth in the play room (there's a futon in there to lay on) downstairs occured to me. But absolutely no hesitation of homebirth, or fear for myself or soon to be #3. Not worried about pain, bleeding, nothing. I know everything is going to go great.
So what am I eating for babe today??
Since Tris just got back from his dad's and needs (IMO) to detox a little, he's green smoothieing and I've decided to join him. We'll also juice, and have fresh fruit and veggies to snack on this evening and tomorrow.
Breaky was:
green smoothie w/ fresh picked collards and peas from the garden, b-nas, apple, MSM, and barly juice powder. Made enough for lunch, too.
Also have fresh picked cuke and g.beans tossed with a hint of olive oil and sea salt to chew on. (I LOVE YOU GARDEN.) We'll be making some agave-raspberry-lemonade as well, maybe into popsicles if Tris wants. I picked up some more frozen fruit for smoothies today, as well as canelope and mangos. The raspberries should be coming soon, and I NEED to call my blueberry lady to see if they're ready for picking (I'm not familiar w/ blueberry timeframes). OH, almost forgot about mulberries. Those should be ready too.
Sorry if i'm rambling and hard to understand. My time's up, anyhoo.
~~~SharilynRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03705722228987921339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6827557966163506532.post-51087866386185368962010-06-30T13:47:00.000-07:002010-06-30T13:54:54.832-07:00Speaking of Cucumbers . . .I'm sooo excited--I harvested our first cucumber today. Sooo yummy. It turned out to be breakfast for me, as I wasn't very hungry. ( Ate a little while later too.) My sweet spirit was it good.
Other garden news: Lots of green tomatoes, beans are getting there, peas have been harvested and another batch due in a few more weeks, baby carrots--OMG are they good---, Lots of kale and collards being washed and frozen for smoothies. Other stuff growing GREAT. Strawberries are done--they didn't do so well this year w/ all the moisture. Time to harvest mulberries. Blue berry lady will be getting a visit from me soon too.

How is your garden growing??? Often Rowan is in tow . . . think about that one. Anyhoo, hopefully I can do some work at home on my slow stand-by computer, as my fast baby crashed--with all my pics, raw info, wild stuffs info, you get the idea--and then bring in ready-to-cut-n-paste info to post.

On the homefront, the garden has been the joy and focus for the whole fam lately. This year we continued with the square foot garden idea. We now have two 4x16' raised beds edged by 2x4's, plus a couple other beds, one for strawberries, a bush tomato area, raspberry and blueberry, one that is yet to be turned and planted. The kids have had a blast helping with the planting of seeds and transplants, and Rowan makes sure to add all worms she finds to my flower pots on the steps, since they didn't have any. I've also transformed quite a bit of the foundation planting in the front and back, and on the west side. It's looking beautiful, considering how frugally it's come into being, from trading work for splits and growing perrenials from seed (ever try that?!!) Hopefully, I'll be able to download camera software on the slow computer and get some pics posted this year. ((giggle))
Asperagus is up a little bit. Ro munches every chance she gets. She also loves the mint, violets, clover, and wood sorrel, though I had to stop her picking the chives--she nibbled so much I was afraid there wouldn't be any left to come back!!
Prego-wise I'm doing well, though I get super-tired about once a week and just need to stop moving for a day. I'm past the halfway mark at about . . . 22 weeks I think?? But so far when I feel like that I do fresh juices and feel better.
~~SharilynRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03705722228987921339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6827557966163506532.post-75140688472988669162010-05-10T12:17:00.000-07:002010-05-10T13:13:38.845-07:00Sody-pop!!!I had to post this quick, cuz I'm excited about my creation.

Healthy Soda-Pop
Fresh juice, with or without a sweetener. Okay, pardon my (fill in the blank) sense of humor. . .
I'm kinda bummed - - all of the blogs that i follow (and i only follow 4) have gone private. Ouch. So I'm looking for any blogs on raw pregnancy right now--haven't found any (sep the now private ones). If anyone knows of anyone raw, pregnant, and blogging, please leave me a comment, or e-mail me at rawbabyrowan@yahoo.com.
Pg life is getting better--the first trimester wasn't the best, quite a bit of vomiting, lost some weight, couldn't eat much. I made sure to get my pre-natal whole food supplements in me every day though. (http://www.nutritiongeeks.com/ ) They did help ALOT as they contain a couple things that combat the nausea. Plus I made ginger-lemon-honey pops to have on hand as needed. (Had to make extra for the kids!!)
When I wasn't nauseous I had some interesting cravings. One was banana slices with Parmasean cheese (which I never did have, since we didn't have any cheese). Dark romaine leaves were another. Beyond that, a lot of aversions.
Thankfully, I'm in week 15 (i think??) and the nausea is mostly gone. Felt babe "kicking" for the last 3 weeks. Lovin' it!!!! At least until the "kicks" start interrupting sleep. LOL. My midwife was concerned about my protein consumption last visit, so I'm focusing on that right now. Hemp, pumpkin, sunny, chia seed smoothies, Oh Joy!! (Among other things.)
Ro-Ro moved into a "big girl" bed two nights ago and is loving it--probally has something to do with the newfound freedom. I heard a noise last night about 1 am and found her playing in her closet. Hmmmm, maybe the bed wasn't such a good idea . . . oh well. Makes for some laughs, even at 1 am. She's also started reading a few words, loves singing, and makes up the best stories . :o)
Tris has been helping me in the yard quite a bit, helping dig/edge beds, raking, picking up sticks. Now that it's warming up we've all had bursts of energy and just seem to want to soak up that sunshine! Babies have been started indoors again, and Rich and I both get excited seeing what's newly popped up. Can't wait for the new nettles to arrive--good iron, and perfect timing for the new one!
Here's the ginger-pop receipe:
Squeeze some lemons, pour into blender
add equal amount of sweetner as juice
add 1/2 to 1" ginger root
add a little bit of water, blend and strain. First Rowan, then me, then Tristen got a cold. Rowan's turned into an ear infection (her first ever), I lost about 6 1/2 pounds cuz I just couldn't eat anything, and Tris managed to only miss a couple days of school. Jeez Louise!! So far Rich hasn't gotten sick, though he's been dealing with other issues of late (sore neck from work). Thankfully we have a case of coconuts, so we've been sucking down--ahh time's up at the library. will have to finish later!!Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03705722228987921339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6827557966163506532.post-88463793944189757992010-01-25T11:46:00.000-08:002010-01-27T13:58:24.233-08:00We're Expecting!As many of you who read this blog know, we're expecting. This new addition is being toted as our Christmas baby as s/he was conceived on Christmas. How cool, as I was figuring that another addition to my extended family was conceived right about All Hallow's Eve. So two holiday babes will be arriving this year.
I am sooo happy to be pregnant again--it's just what I wanted: to conceive in December so I could have a fall babe. Should make gardening this year interesting with a pregnant belly!
The kids are doing wonderfully. Tris is at the top of his class, though interestingly enough he said he was considering being home schooled next year, as school isn't very challenging. But he's worried about leaving all his friends. So a talk with his teacher is on the agenda about upping his curriculum level. I leave it up to him. Rowan is becoming another book worm, and has recently "fallen in love with" Sid the Science Kid videos. Both kids have been completely healthy all winter. No colds or sniffles. Mama too!
Hope everyone is doing as well.

~~SharilynRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03705722228987921339noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6827557966163506532.post-29577755482617070902009-12-02T15:57:00.000-08:002009-12-02T17:09:59.925-08:00Hilarious but Great Raw Food Song on YouTubeCheck it: http://www.rdnmovement.com/the-raw-food-kids/
Effing hilarious, but perfect for 8 year old Tristen.
Ho ell, here's another that i love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTxVYuFJsIY
Kids are doing great. Just had some library useage issues and time factors. Everyone's healthy. With the H1N1 going around, we've been doing maple-lemonade w/ cayenne and ACV and honey drinks. Plus green smoothies of course! More deets soon, hopefully.

~SharilynRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03705722228987921339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6827557966163506532.post-34683503291728713062009-10-07T13:42:00.000-07:002009-10-07T13:53:33.864-07:00UpdateHey ya'all!

Been taking a break from blogging--obviously--but all are well. Apples and pears are ripe and are being picked every other day or so, and either juiced or pealed and frozen. I'm on day four of a fast--mainly water, though some fresh apple juice and a mineral mix to help combate the acidic levels in my body as it detoxes. Planning on a minimum of 33 days, but will listen to my body to see how it feels. Tris and Ro are doing great. Rowan's learned quite a few of her abc's (suprise to me as i wasn't specifically teaching her!!) and is counting to 12. She sings the itsy-bitsy spider song, twinkle twinkle star, and the teapot song to me at night when we go to bed--soo cute!! Tris brought home all A's on this last midterm. Scouts has disbanded for his age--not enough interest--so we're looking into some alternative activities. Karate, yoga, dance, . . . we'll see what turns up!

Had some computer problems as of late, also contributing to non-blogging status. Hopefully will have everything fixed soon.

Keep checking back!<br After returning from dad's for 5 weeks: 72 and 1/2 pounds!

Well Tristen is home from his 5 week stay with his dad—over which time his dad fed him junk, junk, junk. He is now 18 pounds heavier than when he left. Holy Mother of God. I am so sad and so sick to think that a parent wouldn’t think that that’s unhealthy—nevermind the whole meat and dairy and cooked everything. Jesus f-ing Christ, that’s a 33% weight increase in 5 short weeks!!! That’s like a 150# adult gaining 50 pounds, or a 200# adult growing to 266#s!!! Tristen went from 54.4#s(fully clothed) to 72.4#s (in underwear). The “best” part is there’s nothing I can do. The courts don’t have a say in what you feed your child—yet I’ve read horror stories about how CPS will jump in and take away your kids because you feed them a healthy, full of vitamins, raw organic fruits and vegetables diet.

I’m done. I’m sick to my stomach and so upset. Time to make juices and smoothies.
